Pushkar Festival
Pushkar Tour is a town in the state of Rajasthan in India. Pushkar means born due to a flower ,Pushkar is acclaimed to be the only place in the world to have temple dedicated to lord Brahma. Legend has it that Brahma was in search of a suitable place to perform a Vedic Yagya (sacrifice) While he was contemplating, a lotus fell from his hand and water sprouted from three places. One of them was pushkar and Brahma decided to perform his Yagya here. The month of "Kartik Purnima" (full moon in Oct. - Nov.) is considered auspicious by the Hindus to take a dip in the holy lake. The ancient town is transformed magically into a gigantic fair ground during those four days of "Kartic Purnima". The highlight of the fair is the trading of camels. One gets to see Camels in thousands dressed up, paraded bought and sold here.Camel-traders and villagers from miles away converge to Pushkar with their humped beasts. Over 25,000 camels (and that's on the conservative side) are traded, making this the world's largest camel fair.Taj Mahal Tours arranges the exclusive camps at Pushkar fair.
Pushkar Lake
In Pushkar About 400 temples and shrines are located at Pushkar and around its holy lake, which is mention in the Padma Purana. Legend has it that Lord Brahma in search for a spot to hold his 'yagna' (religious ritual), dropped the lotus from his hand, the three spots touched by this flower were turned into lakes. These are today known as the 'Jyeshtha Pushkar' (main Pushkar), the 'Madhyam Pushkar' (medium Pushkar) and the 'Kanishtha Pushkar' (little Pushkar). A temple dedicated to Lord Brahma is located at Pushkar; the other important temples are those of Gayatri, Savitri, Shiv and Badri Narayan. When visiting Pushkar a visit to the Brahma temple and the lake is a must. At the lake, you can witness various prayer ceremonies and the holy bath by the pilgrim who come from all over India. The priests at Pushkar are supposed to maintain the genealogical records of all Hindu families and many pilgrims come to visit their priest and get their "records" updated. You can watch the traditional Aarti being performed in the evening. At sunset, you can watch the lights of the temples around the lake come on one after another accompanied by Shlokas sung melodiously by priests at the temples. Prominent among the ghats are Gau Ghat, Brahma Ghat and Varah Ghat. Also called Main Ghat, Gau Ghat is the place from which ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were sprinkled into the lake. Brahma Ghat is believed to be the spot where Brahma himself is said to have worshipped. The Varah Ghat is famed to be the place where Vishnu, the preserver of the Hindu Trinity, appeared in the form of Varaha (a boar), third in the line of his nine incarnations. It is advisable for the visitors, who travel to the Pushkar lake, not to take photos and to remove their shoes before going to the ghats.
People consider the water of the Pushkar Lake to be very sacred and the ritual of taking dips in the holy water is believed to bestow salvation.
Pushkar Fair
Pushkar is also famous for its annual Pushkar Camel Fair.Thousands of people go to the banks of the Pushkar lake where the fair takes place. Men buy and sell their livestock, which includes camels, cows, sheep and goats. The women go to the stalls, full of bracelets, clothes, textiles and fabrics. A camel race starts off the festival, with music, songs and exhibitions to follow. Between these events, the most waited for is the test of how the camel is able to bring the items.
